UGC content explained: what it is, what it isn't and when it pays off

5 min read

UGC stands for user generated content, meaning content produced by users. In marketing, the term rarely means its original sense any more. When an agency or a creator sells you UGC content, it is almost always commissioned ad material made to look as if an ordinary user shot it: a phone camera, an everyday setting, a face to camera, no studio lights and no scripted ad speak.

This difference is worth taking in before you buy anything. You are paying for the form, not for a real customer having made a video about your product of their own accord. UGC is a production method and a style, not a free phenomenon you can bring about by asking.

What UGC content means in practice

The same term is used to sell three different things, and the confusion costs money.

The first is genuine customer content: someone buys your product, films a video of it because they want to and posts it on their own account. You cannot order or schedule this. All you can do is make a product people want to film, and ask for permission to share the video on.

The second is a commissioned UGC-style ad. A creator shoots the video from an agreed script, you get the files and the usage rights, and the video runs as paid reach through your ad account. The vast majority of work sold under the name UGC is exactly this.

The third is content published on the brand's own account, made with the same everyday touch. It is not on an influencer's account and it is not just an ad, but part of the ongoing publishing on your own channel. In practice this is closest to the work we do every day.

UGC content or influencer marketing

The difference is what you buy. In an influencer collaboration you buy access to another person's audience and their credibility. The video is published on their account, the price is set by follower count and past results, and when the campaign ends, the reach ends.

With UGC content you buy production and usage rights. The video is yours, distribution is your responsibility and on your budget. The price does not depend on the creator's follower count, because no audience was bought with it. The same video can run as an ad for months if the usage rights agreement was made sensibly.

The practical consequence: an influencer collaboration is a way to get a quick spike and borrowed trust. UGC content is a cheaper way to produce lots of material to test in your ad account. They do not replace each other. If your goal is awareness in a particular community, an influencer is the right tool. If your goal is to find the one hook that sells, you need volume, meaning UGC-style production.

UGC content or the brand's own content

Traditional brand content is built around the product and the brand: clean footage, considered lighting, a tone of voice that sounds like an ad. UGC-style content is built around a person. The viewer sees a face, hears everyday speech and gets a reason to stay within a few seconds.

In practice the line is blurred, and more important than the label is whether the first second looks like an ad. If it does, the viewer skips it no matter how expensively it was produced.

This shows in the numbers. With OnePlus Finland, the first four posts brought 131,000 views and organic reach grew by 650%. The first video gathered 300% more views than the previous partner's videos on the same account. The product was the same, the audience was the same, the form was different.

When UGC content works for a Finnish consumer brand

The form works when these conditions are met:

  • The product can be shown in a few seconds. Food, clothes, shoes, apps, physical consumer products.
  • The purchase decision is quick. The viewer can decide the same evening, not after three meetings.
  • The target group is on Instagram and TikTok. In Finland that means the vast majority of young adults and working-age consumers.
  • Production can be kept running continuously. One good video is not enough, because you do not know in advance what works.

With Sneak.fi, the first 30 days brought 9.8 million views, and the Black Friday campaign returned 8x on ad spend. All four conditions were met: the product shows in a second, the purchase decision happens the same evening, the audience is already on the channels and shooting continued throughout.

With Hans Välimäki we made 41 short-form videos that gathered 3.2 million views. A restaurant is a good example here because the product needs no explaining, but distribution has to be limited by region. Otherwise the reach comes from people who will never turn up.

What they share is volume and continuity. Neither ordered three videos and sat back to wait. How ongoing production is actually built is explained on the page short-form video for businesses. Kanavakohtaisen sopivuuden käymme läpi artikkelissa is TikTok advertising worth it for a business.

When UGC content is not worth making

This section matters more than the previous one, because a content budget put in the wrong place is an expensive way to learn.

You sell B2B and the deal size is large. If you sell a €30,000 system to three hundred companies in Finland, you know the buyers by name. Then a call and a meeting return more than a short-form video. UGC content works on mass audiences, not on name lists.

The product cannot be shown. Insurance, accounting and consulting are hard, because nothing happens on screen. Expert content with a face works better for these, and that is a different discipline from UGC.

You cannot handle the demand. If stock runs out, messages go unread or the restaurant has no tables, growing reach produces disappointed customers. Fix the bottleneck first.

The budget only stretches to a few videos. A one-off purchase produces nothing measurable, because the sample is too small. This is worked out in the article short-form video pricing.

Your offer does not work. Distribution amplifies whatever it has to distribute. If the pricing, the product page or the purchase path does not work, content only makes the problem more visible.

What UGC content costs in Finland

The market has two ways of pricing. When buying individual videos, a freelance creator's price range is typically around €200 to €500 per video. That includes shooting and editing, not distribution or optimisation. The price moves to the top of the range if the creator travels to another town, if several versions of the video are needed or if the usage rights cover paid advertising rather than organic posting only.

The other way is monthly pricing, where you buy the management of the whole channel rather than individual files. Then the same sum also pays for ideation, the publishing calendar, replying to comments and someone reading the numbers and changing the plan based on them. A comparison of video prices goes wrong if one quote includes these and the other does not.

A third cost item is often forgotten entirely: the media budget. The agency fee and the ad budget are two different things, and their ratio should be agreed in advance. This is explained in the article how much social media marketing costs. Meidän oma hinnoittelumme on koottu the price list.

How production is kept running

UGC production that works is a routine, not a project. Ideas come from comments, customer service questions and sales objections. Shoots are done in batches, so that one day produces several weeks of material. Several versions are made of the same video, changing only the opening, because the first second decides most of the result.

After publishing, we read the watch time and the point where viewers drop off. The best-performing videos are moved into paid distribution, which is described on the page paid advertising for businesses. Loput arkistoidaan ja niistä opitaan.

One thing to check in the contract: who keeps the material and the accounts. If you do not own the files and the usage rights, you bought a rental, not an asset.

If you want to know whether this suits you

Go through your product, your margins and your current channel situation and see whether the conditions listed in this article are met. If they are not, it is better to say so out loud before anyone films anything.

We do this work for over 30 partners and generate over 7 million views a month for them. Book a short meeting and we will go through the numbers together. If the answer is that UGC content is not the right tool for you, we will say so straight.
