How to choose a marketing partner? 7 questions before signing
A marketing partner is an external team or agency that runs a company's marketing on an ongoing basis and takes responsibility for results, not just deliverables. In practice, choosing the right partner comes down to seven questions worth asking every candidate before signing a contract. Here they are, and at the end we say plainly which needs we suit and which we do not.
About the author: this guide was written by a company that sells marketing partnerships. The questions still work no matter who you buy from, and you should use them on us too.
1. Who owns the outcome?
The most important question. Many agencies deliver what was agreed, videos, posts or campaigns, and their responsibility ends at delivery. A partner owns the outcome: if sales do not move, the partner changes what it does without having to be asked.
A test question for the candidate: what do you do if the numbers are not improving after three months? A good answer contains a concrete process. A bad answer is an upsell.
2. What is measured and how is it reported?
Views, followers and reach are intermediate steps. Somewhere along the chain, money has to show up: website visits, enquiries, sales. Ask what the partner reports each month and how the metrics connect to sales.
A warning sign is a report that always looks good. If nothing ever fails, something is being left out. A useful report also shows what did not work and what will be done instead.
3. What makes up the price?
In Finland, marketing partnerships are typically priced as a fixed monthly fee, and the level usually lands at a few thousand euros a month. Instead of the price, compare what is included: how many pieces of content are produced, who publishes, and whether ad management and reporting are included.
Always ask separately about the media budget. Ad money paid to Meta, TikTok or Google is a different cost from the partner's fee, and it should run through your company's own ad account. If a proposal bundles the fee and the media budget into one sum, ask for a breakdown before you compare it with anything. We have explained the pricing logic in more detail in the article how much social media marketing costs.
4. Who actually does the work?
The most experienced team often sits in the sales meeting, and someone else does the day-to-day work. That is not automatically a problem, but it is worth knowing in advance. Ask which named people will make the content, run the ads and answer your messages, and how many other clients the same team has.
5. Do the references look like your situation?
The value of a reference is not the size of the logo but how similar the situation is. A consumer brand should look at consumer brand cases, a B2B company at B2B cases. Ask for at least one case where the starting point resembled yours, and ask what results came out of it and in what time.
Treat promises with caution in both directions: nobody honest sells guaranteed virals, but a partner must be able to show repeated results, not one success.
6. How does the partnership end?
The best time to read the termination terms is before you sign. A reasonable model is an initial period of a few months, after which the contract continues month by month. Also make sure the ad accounts, social media channels and produced material are owned by your company and stay with you if the partnership ends. This is the most common point where a badly negotiated contract comes back to bite.
7. Does the partner's focus match the source of your growth?
Marketing partners come in many kinds: strategy-led, advertising-led, content-led and full-service houses. None of them is objectively the best; the choice depends on where your growth comes from.
| Source of growth | Suitable partner type |
|---|---|
| Visibility and demand on social media | Content-led partner |
| Capturing existing demand | Search- and advertising-led partner |
| Sharpening the brand and the message | Strategy-led partner |
| All of the above at once | Full-service house |
Where we are good and where we are not
Formi Works is a content-led partner for consumer brands: outsourced marketing team, whose engine is 10–16 short-form videos a month, channel management and scaling organically tested content with paid advertising. For this need we dare to claim we are among the best in Finland, and we compared ourselves directly with ten other agencies, so the claim can be checked.
We are not the right choice if you need a full search marketing package, print or pure strategy consulting. In that case the seven questions above will take you to a better address.
If, on the other hand, your growth comes from social media, book a short meeting. We will answer the same seven questions about ourselves, plainly and with numbers.
