TikTok Shop and Finland: what an online store should do now
At the time of writing, TikTok Shop is not open in Finland. A Finnish online shop therefore cannot sell products directly inside the app, and a Finnish consumer does not see a shopping basket at the bottom of a video the way a British or Spanish user does. No public launch date for Finland has been announced. If someone is selling you a "TikTok Shop readiness package" with a specific date, ask for the source.
This does not mean the topic is irrelevant to you. The work that decides success on TikTok Shop in the countries where it is open is almost entirely the same work that already works in Finland today: a steady flow of videos, a recognisable account, a working product page and relationships with creators. The shop button is the last piece, not the first.
What TikTok Shop is
TikTok Shop is TikTok's built-in marketplace. The user sees a video, taps the product link, picks a size and pays without leaving the app. The order, the payment and often the start of customer service happen on TikTok's side. The seller handles stock and delivery, and TikTok takes a sales commission on every transaction.
The size of the commission varies by country and product category, and it has changed several times in the countries where the service is open. Always check the current level in TikTok's own seller centre, not on a vendor's slide.
The essential difference from ordinary social media advertising is the length of the purchase path. When the consumer does not have to switch to a browser, a new shop and a new checkout process, the threshold for an impulse purchase drops. That favours cheap, visual products and punishes expensive ones that need consideration.
Where TikTok Shop currently operates
TikTok Shop started in Southeast Asia and the UK, expanded to the United States and has in recent years opened in several European countries, including Ireland, Spain, Germany, France and Italy. The Nordic countries are not on the list yet.
The country list keeps changing, so check the situation on TikTok's official pages before you base decisions on it. The general pattern in the countries that have opened has been the same: the seller needs a local company, a local supply chain and a local bank account. In practice this means a Finnish shop cannot get around the situation by registering in another country, unless it genuinely has operations there.
Four ways of selling on TikTok Shop
In the countries that have opened, sales do not happen through one feature but four, and they behave very differently.
Product links in videos are the basic format. An ordinary short video with a product at the bottom. This is the closest to what a Finnish brand is already doing now.
LIVE selling is a discipline of its own. A stream can last hours, with a presenter going through products and answering comments in real time. It is a labour-intensive format and needs a person who can talk to the camera for a long time without a script.
The shop tab and the profile's product showcase work like a search engine. Some users search for products directly, and then product titles, images and reviews decide.
The affiliate programme is the part that most often surprises. Creators can pick products from a shop to sell and earn a commission on every sale. In a well-run situation a brand ends up with a distributed sales machine of hundreds of creators that it does not film itself. Badly managed, it means your product is being talked about in a way you do not control.
What a Finnish online shop can do now
Practical preparation is not waiting. It is the same work that produces results even before a possible opening.
Build a posting rhythm that lasts. A single video tells you nothing. Only from a series of dozens of videos can you see which topic and which format pull with your product. When the shop one day opens, the brand with the head start is the one that already has an account, an audience and knowledge of what works. If you have not started yet, the first steps and the kit are lighter than most people imagine.
Test paid distribution now. TikTok's ad platform works normally in Finland even though the shop does not. It is a fast way to find out whether an audience takes to your product at all. The cost items are broken down in the article TikTok advertising costs. Testaamisen järjestyksestä kannattaa lukea myös the comparison of organic and paid, because ad money should only go behind material that has already worked without media spend.
Get your product pages and logistics in order. Traffic from TikTok is fast, impatient and almost entirely on mobile. If the product page loads slowly or there are two payment methods, you lose most of the attention you just paid for.
Get to know creators before you need them. In an affiliate-driven model the winning brand is the one that already has relationships with the people who make content in that category. Those relationships are not built in a week at the point when the shop opens.
Build your own content archive. Footage, product photos, instructions for use and customer feedback. All of it is needed when product listings start getting made, and gathering an archive afterwards is always slower than collecting it along the way.
Clean up your product data now. In the countries that have opened, TikTok Shop search is used the same way as a web shop's search, and the product name, the category and the first image decide whether the product is found at all. If the product name is an internal code or the photos were taken against a white background three years ago, that work is ahead of you either way. The same clean-up improves the conversion of your current online shop, so it is not wasted even if the shop never opens in Finland.
When this is not worth your time
If you sell to businesses, forget TikTok Shop. It is consumer commerce, and the purchase path is built for impulse buying. B2B trade does not work like that.
If your average order is large and the consideration time long, opening a shop will not solve anything. A three-thousand-euro sofa or a tailored service does not sell from a button at the bottom of a video. Short-form video can still work for you as a builder of visibility and awareness, but then the metric is something other than shop conversion.
If your margin cannot take a sales commission, discount campaigns and returns at the same time, do the sums before you get excited. Impulse buying pushes up the return rate. The platform's commission comes on top of that.
If you have not yet got your own online shop to convert, a new channel will not fix it. It just moves the same problem to a new place and makes it more expensive.
And if there is nobody in your organisation with time to publish regularly for months, do not start with half a resource. Two videos a month produce nothing measurable, and three months later you are as wise as you are now but more disappointed. Then the options are a proper in-house creator or an external partner, and that calculation should be done before a single video is shot.
What preparation costs in practice
The price depends on who does the work. Freelancer prices for a single video in Finland typically start from a few hundred euros, and in an ongoing partnership pricing becomes monthly. We have broken the differences down in the article what one short video costs.
The essential question is not the unit price of a video but how many posts a month you get for the same money and who is responsible for making sure they actually get published. Buying individual videos does not fill the calendar.
What we have seen in our own numbers
We cannot tell you anything about TikTok Shop results in Finland, because there are none. We can tell you what happens when a continuous flow of video is set up for a Finnish online shop.
Sneak.fi collected 9.8 million views in the first 30 days, and in the Black Friday campaign the return on ad spend was 8x. Traveller passed 500,000 views with its first two posts. In both cases the sales came through an ordinary online shop, not from a basket inside the platform.
These came about without a shop button. If and when that button comes to Finland, it is added on top. It does not replace the work.
If you want to go through your situation
If your product is a consumer product, your average order is moderate and your margin can carry advertising, it is worth starting the work now rather than waiting for a launch nobody has confirmed. We do this work as an ongoing service where ideation, shooting, editing and publishing come from the same place, and for online shops it is packaged as its own offering on the page social media marketing for online shops. Painopiste on käytännössä aina tuotelähtöisessä sisällössä, koska se on ainoa muoto, joka siirtyy sellaisenaan kaupan puolelle sitten kun sinne on siirrettävää.
Book a meeting and we will go through your product range, your margins and your current channel situation together. If the answer is that this is not relevant for you right now, we will say so in that same meeting.
